GROUND WORK: interview with Paul Burgess, Head Groundsman for real Madrid CF

Katie McIntyre speaks with Paul Burgess, Head Groundsman for real Madrid CF, who recently topped a poll as the most influential figure in the turf care industry by Turf company magazine readers and was not only named the first European CSFM but also awarded the environmental certification for both the Santiago Bernabéu stadium and training grounds at the STMA.

KM: Firstly, congratulations on being named the ‘No.1 many influential figure in the turf care industry’ by Turf company and also on being named the first European CSFM and awarded the environmental certification for both real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu stadium and training grounds at the STMA. how does it feel winning these types of awards?

Winning awards imply you’re doing something right, this is always a good thing to be told and it’s great to get recognition for your work, this last award was especially pleasing because it was voted for by my peers. I’m in a very fortunate position and I want to share that with people, help people and give something back and I believe this award represents those values.

KM: As Head Groundsman for real Madrid CF, you are responsible not only for keeping the turf at Santiago Bernabéu stadium to an elite standard, but also the practice pitches at the club’s world-class training facility. Can you tell us a little about the main challenges you face on a daily basis and how you conquer them?

I’m in charge of the Bernabéu, probably one of the most challenging stadiums in the world to grow turf due to its size, age, diverse usage, tight event turn arounds and extremes of weather. Our training facility is without doubt the flagship in professional training facilities with 14 pitches, high end landscaped areas and of course all the building facilities the site has to offer. We have 15 professional teams using the site and keeping everybody pleased and keeping the place in top conditions all year round with the climate and usage is very demanding.

KM: What role does technology play in keeping the playing turf in ideal condition? and what kind of turf solution/s do you have installed at Bernabéu and the training centre? i.e. natural grass/hybrid/artificial, a sub soil aeration/heating system, etc?

We use grow lights in the stadium to try and combat shade, I was actually the first to purchase such a system to treat a whole pitch back in 2004.

The Bernabéu is in its 2nd year with a Mixto system, again a first for a major stadium, due to events we have to turn the pitch around in 10-14 days which implies returning, conventional turf we had been working with and with sensible success but once I found a hybrid system I could work with we developed that into a turf.

In the training ground, we have 2 fibre elastic pitches and 1 Air Fibr, the club put a huge emphasis on player injuries and we try to deliver pitches at the softer end on a clegg.

When you see the amount of injuries some teams are getting there are question marks over the systems they use. Some systems are harder than others and they increase the possibility of injury. There are systems that are great for the Groundsman but maybe not so great for the end user, we install systems with the end user in mind and not the Groundsman, this is something I have insisted on. Aeration is done every 7-9 days again with player Camiseta Ajax comfort in mind, all pitches have some form of pitch protection either with heating or covers.

KM: What are the essential elements of your Pitch management plan? and how essential is it to have a concise plan in place?

In all honesty, I don’t really have a great deal of planning. no one day/week is the same, so you react to the weather and ground conditions, some things you can plan but if you want to use a book to maintain a pitch you will come unstuck.

KM: As a UEFA pitch consultant, keeping yourself up-to-date concerning all the most recent technological advances, best practices, etc., is a must. how do you keep yourself ‘in the know’ so to speak?

I completely agree, I’m very fortunate that the club support me in this. I attend the STMA and GIS shows in America. I also attend Saltex in the U.K. and typically do 2 facility trips per year, plus I get to do the pre season trip with the team where ever in the world that is. This, along with speaking with various Groundsmen, and my own research keeps me well informed.

KM: You have certainly witnessed numerous advances in the Turf industry over the last decade. Which do you feel have had the most significant and many essential impact? and what kinds of developments would be many beneficial to the industry moving forward?

In the past, it was grow lights and field top makers, much more recently it was hybrid returf solutions, and now we have UV light to treat diseases (we have purchased 3 machines and are the first major venue and major training facility to go pesticide-, fungicide- and herbicide-free).

Goingforward, I believe the Groundsman should adapt, think much more of the end user when setting up a pitch, become much more commercially aware and assist in making stadiums much more multi use and financially viable (not just ‘get off the grass!’).

I believe products, systems and technology have all advanced, but we as Groundsmen have stood a little still. I do believe they all do a good job in in some cases challenging situations but I don’t believe we are moving forward at any speed.

KM: If you could give one piece of guidance to an industry colleague or someone aspiring to become a Head grounds Manager, what would it be and why?

Work hard, study, fight, think outside the box, be creative and ambitious.

KM: What are your thoughts concerning knowledge-sharing between industry peers?

For me this is very important. I have an open door policy here and anybody can speak with me, no secrets, not guarded. I don’t believe this is the case everywhere, but I hope this develops.

KM: are there are any current hot topics &/or best practices that you would like to comment on?

This year, I got La Liga to purchase into the idea of all clubs giving an information sheet about the pitch 150 minutes before kick off. This includes the following information: game date and competition, last pitch use, pitch size, pitch type, turf type, is it hybrid, if so what type, hardness and rotational testing, ground temperature, watering schedule and weather for game day and pre game day.

This gets passed to both teams, media and referee, it creates transparency and makes teams and Groundsmen accountable, it helps see how and where injuries occur, it gives media information which stops speculation and keeps things facts based.

We also do this for the Champions league on a voluntary basis and I believe they will roll this out to every game in the future. I want to see this rolled out in all the other leagues too.

Huge thanks to Paul Burgess, Head Groundsman, real Madrid CF, for taking the time out of his incredibly busy schedule to do this interview. You can follow Paul on Twitter at: @paul_pburgess

New Santiago Bernabéu Stadium

On January 31, 2014, Florentino Pérez unveiled what will be the Santiago Bernabéu of the future. on that day, the president of real Madrid announced the winning project of the international Tender for Architectural Ideas, which was that of the joint candidature of GMP Arquitectos and L35 Ribas.

Pérez explained:

Once again we should take on a challenge that will change our history. In this stadium a large part of our legend was born and our greatness will continue to grow here.

The winning design included the construction of a spectacular outer-skin, which will engulf the stadium. The eastern façade will feature a huge screen that will be used on special occasions to show the interior on the outside. The skin will come alive through an LED system, allowing the Bernabéu to communicate with its surroundings.

The stadium will be equipped with the most recent technology: information and communication systems, 360-degree screens positioned above the stands and state-of-the-art management systems. It will be safer and much more comfortable for spectators. The project has taken into account the sustainable use of energy.

The plan includes the construction of retail, Camiseta Eintracht Frankfurt leisure and restaurant zones, a hotel and underground parking. The Bernabéu will be transformed and the museum improved. The retractable roofing system will allow the stadium to be used for various sporting events. Moreover, the nature of the design will allow its construction to be carried out without interrupting the normal sporting calendar.

Pérez explained:

We want the Santiago Bernabéu to become the best stadium in the world. The new twenty-first century Bernabéu will continue to be a hallowed ground and it will remain in the heart of our city and be a model and icon in world football. A Bernabéu for all our fans and members to be happy of.

ARE SPACING and INTERLEAVING THE same THING?

A growing body of research has highlighted spacing and interleaving as two of the best learning strategies a student can use for memory retention. due to their vital role in exam success, a rising number of students and teachers are keen to implement these strategies into their revision or classroom.

However, as students try to come to grips with their understanding of these strategies, scientific research into interleaving and spacing continues to expand. This can result in some confusion, with many in education wondering if spacing and interleaving are just the same thing.

The short answer Camiseta AZ Alkmaar is no. For a more detailed answer, we went through the research to help you understand the differences between spacing and interleaving, how each of them works and when to implement them.

Book Interleaving, Spacing and dual Coding Workshop

What is spacing?

Spacing consists of spreading out your revision over a period of time instead of cramming your learning into a single revision session. Essentially, doing a little but often instead of Camiseta Selección de fútbol de Brasil a lot at once. In some studies, using spacing instead of cramming has resulted in a 10% to 30% difference in final test results.

The reason this technique is so effective is because it provides an opportunity for students to forget the material and relearn it, strengthening connections in their long-term memory.

What is interleaving?

Interleaving involves mixing up revision topics instead of focusing on the same one for hours at a time (which is known as “blocking”). It can be used across almost all subjects.

Research shows that implementing interleaving benefits students’ learning by both requiring them to access previous knowledge and helping them make links between different topics, leading to enhanced recall. One study showed that students performed 7% better in their final exam when interleaving their revision compared to those Camiseta Newcastle United who blocked their revision.

How are spacing and interleaving different?

You would be forgiven for thinking, at first glance, that spacing and interleaving are the same thing: both involve leaving gaps between revision sessions on a given topic to make stronger connections.

However, if you look a bit closer, you’ll realise that the two study techniques are a lot more different than it seems.

Use of time

One of the main differences lies in their concepts of time. Spacing focuses on longer periods of time: for example, doing a given amount of revision over the course of two weeks rather than cramming it all in one evening. On the other hand, interleaving concerns shorter periods of time: it’s about alternating between topics during one study session.

Benefits to memory

Research shows that spacing your learning enhances memory because constantly referring back to material and relearning it is more effective over a longer timeframe. As mentioned earlier, this is because it actually gives you enough time to almost forget it. In contrast, interleaving enhances inductive learning (which is when students observe and examine examples of a theory to discover the patterns between them, working out the rules or principles of the theory themselves) and later memory retrieval.

Choices of topics

To use either of these techniques effectively, it is vital to understand this difference. When using spacing, the topics or subjects you revise don’t particularly have an impact on the results. but in order to experience the benefits of interleaving, the topics you mix up should be related or similar.

Research shows that when interleaving completely unrelated topics, there is no benefit on memory retention. In practice, this could mean alternating between different John Keats poems for English to establish common themes rather than mixing maths revision with religious studies.

Are interleaving and spacing related?

As you now know, spacing occurs between revision sessions, whilst interleaving occurs within sessions. The result is that interleaving topics in your revision session will mean that you won’t cover the entire topic in one session. This causes you to revisit the topic at a later date so you can continue your learning, resulting in spacing. This is a classic square/rectangle effect: all interleaving is spacing, but not all spacing is interleaving.

Another interesting point is that, although both revision strategies lead to slower and more error-prone learning in the short-term, they boost memory retention when implemented over a longer time span. So, these may frustrate students at first, but if they stick to it, it will pay off.

How to use these effective revision strategies

How to use spacing

One study found that students who spaced out their revision sessions got an average mark of 74% in the final test, as opposed to a 49% average for those who crammed theirs – making it a very attractive technique for students.

An easy way to implement spacing is to create a study schnull

Michelle Wie manages Prodigy pressure to Win

how Wie manages Pressure

Have others told you that you “have a lot of potential?” often the word potential characterizes the large gap between a golfer current level of performance and what he is capable of performing.

Though lots of coaches and parents use this phrase to motivate, golfers can feel a lot of anxiety due to the high level of expectations from others.

I work with a lot of golfers that sense high expectations from others.

The crucial to overcoming pressure is to manage these expectations (from others and your own) and have fun with the game.

Yeah, I know… much easier said than done.

Well let’s look at someone who is taking care of the highest of expectations and their journey to success.

Michelle Wie was considered a prodigy when she became the youngest player (10 years old) to qualify for a USGA amateur championship.

Wie turned professional shortly before her sixteenth birthday in 2005 with a great deal of fanfare. Expectations were high for Wie and she struggled to mange the pressure.

Wie’s first LPGA tournament victory came in 2009 then, nine months later she won her second LPGA tournament.

It took 79 events until Wie won another championship as she rebounded from four shots down to win the 2014 LPGA Lotte Championship.

The victory ended a four-year winless drought and marked her first come-from-behind victory.

Wie overtook leader Angela Stanford on the final day of play and finished at 14-under to win by two shots. The victory moved Wie’s ranking from from 23rd to 13th in the world.

In her post-tournament interview, Wie was asked, “What do you think that says about your resiliency ideal now and your mental strength of your game?”

Wie supplied a great idea on mentally taking care of tournament pressure…

“I’m just having fun out there… whenever I felt nervous out there, I was looking around and I was like there was really no other place I would rather be. So I just had a blast out there today.”

Wie was unfazed by the pressure despite being four-shots down, “Well, my caddie isn’t one for pep talks, but he gave me a good one on the green today. He was like just play your game. You are Camiseta Urawa Red Diamonds playing well. and that’s really what I did. I didn’t try to force anything.”

Tips to get rid of Expectations and pressure Camiseta Stade Rennais FC to be Great:

You start by acknowledging the expectations you feel to play great golf, not try to neglect them. Next, you want to replace these pressure-packed expectations with basic goals, such as to hit fairways and greens.

Next, you want to make having fun a priority. Golf is meant to be fun, right? Why did you take pleasure in golf when you first started playing the game (before the expectations arrived)?

Keep in mind that you can feel nervous and still play well if you manage your emotions, focus on your game and have fun. By developing your mental toughness, your golf game will reach greater heights.

Grow their learning

By definition, SEN children struggle with their learning. They may have particular difficulties in certain subjects – for example, claiming that they’re no good at maths. They can get frustrated and demotivated, and typically display a fixed mindset belief that they just can’t do it, it’s a lost cause. This can lead them to give up, believing that they are not as bright as others.

Growth mindset helps children to change this view from “I just can’t do it” to “I can’t do it yet”, with the all important “yet” illustrating to children that they can improve and develop Camiseta Selección de fútbol de México their abilities. For example, researchers in this study provided growth mindset training to SEN children and found that it improved their motivation for learning.

Growth mindset also helps children to cope better with mistakes, by seeing setbacks as something that can help them learn and improve, rather than proof that they’re not capable of doing it. This of course, can help SEN children to overcome “stuck points” in their learning, developing their resilience.

Teachers can help with this through praising children for hard work and effort rather than for any natural ability. This helps children to Camiseta Manchester United realise their potential and that they can do and learn pretty much anything if they put their mind to it.

Help them manage their own behaviour

As well as learning difficulties, it’s common for SEN children to display some problem behaviours, which typically come from them feeling “stuck” in their bodies and minds. When they try to communicate these feelings, it can come out as explosive emotions and behaviours. SEN children may struggle to deal with emotions such as anger and anxiety and end up blaming others for their misbehaviours and emotional outbursts. For example, they might say “he made me angry, so I kicked the chair”, defaulting their kicking the chair on the person who made them angry.

Growth mindset teaches children that they are in control, of their intelligence and performance but of their behaviours too. developing a growth mindset encourages SEN children to take more responsibility for their own behaviours, allowing them to take control of them. This can reduce their stress and aggression, improve their well-being, help them to deal with their emotions, and improve unhelpful behaviours.

Helps them get through the Coronavirus crisis

Finally, growth mindset can help SEN children to cope with the stresses and worries of the Coronavirus crisis. The pandemic has presented challenges for everyone, but particularly for vulnerable groups, including SEN children. They may be more at risk of falling behind, and more unsettled and stressed by all the change and uncertainty.

Since growth mindset can help children to regulate their emotions better, and help them to see things more positively, developing a growth mindset can help SEN children to be more resilient during these tough times.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Children with special educational needs can experience a variety of difficulties in their lives. Although they may share these difficulties with many other children, such as struggling with classwork, being unable to manage emotions, and misbehaving, it is much harder to undo the negative thinking processes that lead to these difficulties for SEN children than it is for other children.

This is where growth mindset really comes in handy. It can be a powerful tool to allow SEN children to overcome their difficulties and unlock their potential.
