ARE SPACING and INTERLEAVING THE same THING?

A growing body of research has highlighted spacing and interleaving as two of the best learning strategies a student can use for memory retention. due to their vital role in exam success, a rising number of students and teachers are keen to implement these strategies into their revision or classroom.

However, as students try to come to grips with their understanding of these strategies, scientific research into interleaving and spacing continues to expand. This can result in some confusion, with many in education wondering if spacing and interleaving are just the same thing.

The short answer Camiseta AZ Alkmaar is no. For a more detailed answer, we went through the research to help you understand the differences between spacing and interleaving, how each of them works and when to implement them.

Book Interleaving, Spacing and dual Coding Workshop

What is spacing?

Spacing consists of spreading out your revision over a period of time instead of cramming your learning into a single revision session. Essentially, doing a little but often instead of Camiseta Selección de fútbol de Brasil a lot at once. In some studies, using spacing instead of cramming has resulted in a 10% to 30% difference in final test results.

The reason this technique is so effective is because it provides an opportunity for students to forget the material and relearn it, strengthening connections in their long-term memory.

What is interleaving?

Interleaving involves mixing up revision topics instead of focusing on the same one for hours at a time (which is known as “blocking”). It can be used across almost all subjects.

Research shows that implementing interleaving benefits students’ learning by both requiring them to access previous knowledge and helping them make links between different topics, leading to enhanced recall. One study showed that students performed 7% better in their final exam when interleaving their revision compared to those Camiseta Newcastle United who blocked their revision.

How are spacing and interleaving different?

You would be forgiven for thinking, at first glance, that spacing and interleaving are the same thing: both involve leaving gaps between revision sessions on a given topic to make stronger connections.

However, if you look a bit closer, you’ll realise that the two study techniques are a lot more different than it seems.

Use of time

One of the main differences lies in their concepts of time. Spacing focuses on longer periods of time: for example, doing a given amount of revision over the course of two weeks rather than cramming it all in one evening. On the other hand, interleaving concerns shorter periods of time: it’s about alternating between topics during one study session.

Benefits to memory

Research shows that spacing your learning enhances memory because constantly referring back to material and relearning it is more effective over a longer timeframe. As mentioned earlier, this is because it actually gives you enough time to almost forget it. In contrast, interleaving enhances inductive learning (which is when students observe and examine examples of a theory to discover the patterns between them, working out the rules or principles of the theory themselves) and later memory retrieval.

Choices of topics

To use either of these techniques effectively, it is vital to understand this difference. When using spacing, the topics or subjects you revise don’t particularly have an impact on the results. but in order to experience the benefits of interleaving, the topics you mix up should be related or similar.

Research shows that when interleaving completely unrelated topics, there is no benefit on memory retention. In practice, this could mean alternating between different John Keats poems for English to establish common themes rather than mixing maths revision with religious studies.

Are interleaving and spacing related?

As you now know, spacing occurs between revision sessions, whilst interleaving occurs within sessions. The result is that interleaving topics in your revision session will mean that you won’t cover the entire topic in one session. This causes you to revisit the topic at a later date so you can continue your learning, resulting in spacing. This is a classic square/rectangle effect: all interleaving is spacing, but not all spacing is interleaving.

Another interesting point is that, although both revision strategies lead to slower and more error-prone learning in the short-term, they boost memory retention when implemented over a longer time span. So, these may frustrate students at first, but if they stick to it, it will pay off.

How to use these effective revision strategies

How to use spacing

One study found that students who spaced out their revision sessions got an average mark of 74% in the final test, as opposed to a 49% average for those who crammed theirs – making it a very attractive technique for students.

An easy way to implement spacing is to create a study schnull

Michelle Wie manages Prodigy pressure to Win

how Wie manages Pressure

Have others told you that you “have a lot of potential?” often the word potential characterizes the large gap between a golfer current level of performance and what he is capable of performing.

Though lots of coaches and parents use this phrase to motivate, golfers can feel a lot of anxiety due to the high level of expectations from others.

I work with a lot of golfers that sense high expectations from others.

The crucial to overcoming pressure is to manage these expectations (from others and your own) and have fun with the game.

Yeah, I know… much easier said than done.

Well let’s look at someone who is taking care of the highest of expectations and their journey to success.

Michelle Wie was considered a prodigy when she became the youngest player (10 years old) to qualify for a USGA amateur championship.

Wie turned professional shortly before her sixteenth birthday in 2005 with a great deal of fanfare. Expectations were high for Wie and she struggled to mange the pressure.

Wie’s first LPGA tournament victory came in 2009 then, nine months later she won her second LPGA tournament.

It took 79 events until Wie won another championship as she rebounded from four shots down to win the 2014 LPGA Lotte Championship.

The victory ended a four-year winless drought and marked her first come-from-behind victory.

Wie overtook leader Angela Stanford on the final day of play and finished at 14-under to win by two shots. The victory moved Wie’s ranking from from 23rd to 13th in the world.

In her post-tournament interview, Wie was asked, “What do you think that says about your resiliency ideal now and your mental strength of your game?”

Wie supplied a great idea on mentally taking care of tournament pressure…

“I’m just having fun out there… whenever I felt nervous out there, I was looking around and I was like there was really no other place I would rather be. So I just had a blast out there today.”

Wie was unfazed by the pressure despite being four-shots down, “Well, my caddie isn’t one for pep talks, but he gave me a good one on the green today. He was like just play your game. You are Camiseta Urawa Red Diamonds playing well. and that’s really what I did. I didn’t try to force anything.”

Tips to get rid of Expectations and pressure Camiseta Stade Rennais FC to be Great:

You start by acknowledging the expectations you feel to play great golf, not try to neglect them. Next, you want to replace these pressure-packed expectations with basic goals, such as to hit fairways and greens.

Next, you want to make having fun a priority. Golf is meant to be fun, right? Why did you take pleasure in golf when you first started playing the game (before the expectations arrived)?

Keep in mind that you can feel nervous and still play well if you manage your emotions, focus on your game and have fun. By developing your mental toughness, your golf game will reach greater heights.

HOME ADVANTAGE: EURO 2016

The European championship is right here as well as numerous pundits are tipping France to win the tournament. aside from having a extremely strong squad, a typical belief has emerged that France already has a head start, as they’ll be able to benefit from the advantages of playing at home. however exactly how genuine is ‘home advantage’ and, if it does exist, exactly how much of an effect does it have?

Enquire about sport Psychology Coaching

A quick look at the history books definitely suggest that when it concerns major tournaments, house teams do well. Uruguay (1930), Italy (1934), Spain (1964), England (1966), Italy (1968) West Germany (1974), Argentina (1978), as well as France (1984 as well as 1998) have all won when holding the world cup or European Championship. likewise special mention should go to South Korea for making the semi-finals when they held the world cup in 2002.

Better Referee Decisions

The primary repercussion of playing at house seems to be the crowd’s impact on the referee as well as not on the actual players. In an fascinating study, referees who viewed a match back on TV in silence made less favourable house decisions than compared to when they viewed matches as well as might hear the house crowd’s reaction.

Teams playing at house are much more likely to be awarded much more penalties, get less yellow Camiseta Yokohama F. Marinos as well as red cards, as well as have much more time added at the end of the match if they are losing. This may not be intentional, however it definitely happens. This suggests that the impact of the crowd results in a subconscious bias from the referee towards the home-team.

More Attacking, much more Effort

A research study by The Times discovered that house teams score much more goals than the away team (about 37% more). The house crowd expects them to go as well as attack. as well as they do.

Research likewise suggests that routine encouragement (which a house crowd tend to provide… particularly at the begin or when things are going well) can assist inspire athletes to put in much more effort. For much more info about exactly how a supportive crowd can help, see our blog, ‘How To get The crowd On Your Side’.

Familiarity

Some researchers suggest that the benefit of playing at house is less to finish with the effect that a supportive crowd can have, as well as much more about the familiarity that the home-team has. understanding as well as being familiar with the pitch dimension, stadium as well as altering space design may help. Some teams have been keen to maximise this as well as have taken to sabotaging the opposition, by altering the conditions of the away altering room. It ought to be stated that may not have the largest of effects but, in an age of marginal-gains, every difference counts.

Defend Your Territory

Playing at house seems to effect the hormones of the athletes. One research study discovered that ‘salivary testosterone levels in soccer players were considerably higher before a house game than an away game’.

Why may this be the case? The authors of this research study suggest that it is linked to defending your territory, the wish to screen dominance as well as assert your house authority. It is not a situation of much more is necessarily much better but, when it concerns hormones, it seems that it can definitely help.

France to Win Again?

Home advantage has been consistently shown to make a difference in sport. particularly in sports such as football, where the whole result can rest on one or two essential moments as well as decisions. France have won two competitions when hosting, as well as have probably the very best goalkeeper, midfielder as well as striker in the tournament. will this be their third success as hosts?

Home teams get much better decisions from referees, score much more goals, can be spurred on to put in much more effort, have a sense of the familiarity before as well as during the match, as well as may benefit from a testosterone boost. Camiseta UNAM Pumas will this be sufficient to take France to European glory in Camiseta FC Porto 2016? only time will tell…
